The Where is the Red crew has been attacked on this blog, on our YouTube site, twitter, and on liberal blogs for being four rich white kids on various occasion. Despite being Hispanic (and Chris Caraballo being Cuban), I haven’t really responded to any of these attacks over the past two and a half months, mostly because I don’t think my race has ANY relevance to the work I am doing whatsoever. However, on Tuesday, I was incredibly offended when I was told… I was not voting for Barack Obama because he is black, I don’t know any minorities, and finally… that Hispanic is not A REAL MINORITY.
We arrived in Denver at 4am in the morning, got some rest and now we are heading downtown to see all that is going on. Keep checking back at the site, we will sure to have plenty of stories to tell and plenty of pictures to post. Have a good Monday!
As we have traveled across the country and worked for over 30 Republican races, we have come across a lot of college aged campaign workers. As we sit down in an office to work, or drive out to an event with these staffers, a common topic of conversation tends to be the Greek system. A lot of the people have been members of fraternities and sororities and we always laugh about the differences of a chapter at each place. In Henderson, NV I came across a fellow member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Nevada State Senator Joe Heck. It was pretty cool to help one of my fraternity brothers in his efforts to get re-elected.
Today we headed north of beautiful San Diego to Riverside, California. Riverside is home to Congressman Ken Calvert, the representative of California’s 44th Congressional district. While Congressman Calvert won in 2006 with 60% of the vote, the campaign is not taking anything for granted and is geared up for a tough fight. We were happy to help the campaign distribute yard signs in the Riverside area.
One of the coolest parts of working for a candidate running for an open seat, or challenging a incumbent Democrat is that we typically get to meet the candidate and spend a little time with him or her. Yesterday, we got to spend more than just a few moments with Texas 22nd Congressional district candidate Pete Olson; we spent almost the whole day with him. While going door-to-door in Pearland yesterday, I had privilege of being teamed up with Pete, and was able to talk to him for a couple of hours. I wanted to share some of my experiences because after talking to Pete, I see why Republicans are so excited at the prospect of working alongside him.
Today we are in Texas’s 22nd Congressional district to help Pete Olson, quite possibly Republicans' best opportunity to take a Democrat seat and turn it red. We had the opportunity to meet Pete Olson last night at a “meet and greet” in Clear Lake, a suburb of Houston. After seeing him speak, it’s easy to see why Republicans are excited about the prospect of him become this district's Representative.
Thursday, we hit Topeka, KS, part of the second Congressional district. The Kansas 2nd was one of the most surprising 2006 Republican losses. Congressman Jim Ryun, who had been serving the district for 10 years, was narrowly defeated by Democrat Nancy Boyda. The district is one of the Republican’s top targets to flip back to Red. We entered the district at a strange time, two days after their primary election. Jim Ryun was defeated by current Kansas Treasurer Lynn Jenkins and she will now move forward as the nominee to take this seat back from Boyda.
Tuesday, we headed across the river to Council Bluffs, Iowa to help out in the Western Iowa Victory Office, and go door to door for Congressman Steve King, IA -05. After getting so much attention leading up to the Iowa Caucuses, the citizens of Iowa have to be a little sick of politics, but we kept pounding the pavement for Congressman King and Senator McCain.
Yesterday we spent the afternoon in the outskirts of Kansas City, MO helping out Congressman Sam Graves in Missouri’s 6th Congressional district. Congressman Graves is one of the few MO politicians without a primary election today, but that doesn’t mean his staff is taking the week off.
We are entering Missouri at a crucial time of this election season; the Republican Primary is being held this Tuesday to decide the Republican nominee for Governor and countless other tough races including the Missouri 9th. The Missouri 9th Congressional district is one of the most vulnerable Congressional seat in the state, and naturally Where is the Red hoped to spend a significant amount of time helping it stay Red.
