Hypocrisy at its finest in Denver

The Where is the Red crew has been attacked on this blog, on our YouTube site, twitter, and on liberal blogs for being four rich white kids on various occasion. Despite being Hispanic (and Chris Caraballo being Cuban), I haven’t really responded to any of these attacks over the past two and a half months, mostly because I don’t think my race has ANY relevance to the work I am doing whatsoever. However, on Tuesday, I was incredibly offended when I was told… I was not voting for Barack Obama because he is black, I don’t know any minorities, and finally… that Hispanic is not A REAL MINORITY.

There was a group of about 30 McCain volunteers (including myself) walking throughout the city to show that there was a conservative presence here in Denver. We stopped at a corner to rest for a few minutes when two men approached us. They said that they didn’t want any trouble; they just wanted to ask us why we supported John McCain? A few of us expressed our views and ultimately the two men accused us of not supporting Senator Obama because he was black (despite explaining multiple of his policies we vastly disagreed with). We asserted that race was certainly not the reason we supported John McCain, and subsequently were mobbed by about 10 people around us screaming how we didn’t know any minorities, were racist etc…

Generally, I would let these kind of comments go, but I have really had it up with being accused of being racist, so I responded “Hi, my name is Jeremy, I am Hispanic, my mother and grandparents immigrated to the United States from Argentina. “ One of the CRNC field reps, Brandon, also stepped forward and told the group that he too was Hispanic, Puerto Rican. We were then pushed and yelled at, told that Hispanic is not a real minority, and that we were sellouts who made over $100,000.

Luckily our group was able to make it out of the area without anyone getting hurt but Brandon and I were pretty angry for the rest of the day. It is a shame that this race has had such a racial overtone. I know that not all Democrats think Republicans are racist/think Hispanic is not a real minority. I also realize that unfortunately, race is a factor in many Democrats’, Republicans’, and Independents’ voting preferences. I hope in the next two months, people really look at why or why they aren’t voting for John McCain or Barack Obama, and I hope it is due to the direction they wish to take this country, not the color of their skin.
